You press power. The TV chimes. You can hear the news anchor, the ads, the Netflix intro sound. But the screen stays completely black.
Here is the good news: this symptom almost always means the expensive parts of your TV are working perfectly. The tuner, the processor, the audio amplifier and the operating system are all alive — otherwise you would not hear anything. Something much narrower is broken: either the picture is never being lit, or it is never being delivered to the screen.
There are five things that cause this. You can narrow it down yourself in about two minutes.
Start here: the torch test
This single test splits the five causes into two groups, and you need nothing but a phone torch.
- Turn the TV on and make sure you can hear sound.
- Darken the room as much as possible.
- Shine a bright torch onto the screen at a steep angle, about 10–15 cm away.
- Put your face close and look very carefully at the lit area.
If you can faintly see a picture or the menu under the torchlight — a ghostly, greyish image — then your panel is intact and your TV is genuinely producing an image. It simply has no light behind it. Your backlight has failed. Go to Cause 1.
If you see absolutely nothing under the torch, the image is not reaching the panel at all. Go to Causes 2, 3 and 4.
💡 Why this works: an LCD/LED panel does not emit light. It is a shutter. A separate array of LEDs behind it provides the light. When those LEDs die, the shutter keeps working perfectly — it just has nothing to shutter. Your torch becomes the backlight.
Cause 1: LED backlight failure
This is the most common cause of "sound but no picture" by a wide margin, and it is the one you most want to have. LED strips sit behind the panel and simply burn out over years of use, or a single failed LED takes an entire series string down with it. Heat and poor ventilation accelerate it.
It is a repairable fault. The back is opened, the panel is carefully lifted, and the failed strips are replaced. Cost scales with screen size — a 32-inch set needs far fewer strips than a 55-inch. See our LED TV repair page for what is involved.
Cause 2: Failed T-CON board
The timing controller board takes the video signal from the main board and drives the individual pixels of the panel. When it fails you typically get a black screen with sound, or sometimes a white screen, or a picture broken into vertical bands.
The T-CON is a model-specific board and is usually replaced rather than repaired. It is a moderate-cost fix and well worth doing on almost any television.
Cause 3: Loose or damaged LVDS ribbon cable
A flat ribbon cable carries the image data from the main board to the T-CON. It can work loose over time, particularly if the TV has been moved, wall-mounted, or transported. Its contacts can also oxidise in humid conditions — a real factor during a Delhi monsoon.
This is the cheapest possible outcome. Reseating or replacing a ribbon cable is a small job. It is also the reason a technician should always open the TV before quoting you: nobody wants to be sold a new motherboard for a loose cable.
Cause 4: Failed panel
This is the bad one. If the panel's own driver circuitry has failed, no torch will reveal an image and no board swap will fix it. The panel itself has to be replaced.
We will be blunt with you here, as we are with every customer: on most televisions, a panel replacement is not worth the money. The panel is the single most expensive component in the set — often more than half the price of the entire TV. Cause 5: It is not broken at all
Before you call anyone, rule out the embarrassing one. Roughly one in twenty "black screen" calls we take is not a fault:
- Wrong input source. The TV is on HDMI 2 and your set-top box is on HDMI 1. You hear sound from a different source or from the TV's own tuner. Cycle every input with the Source button.
- The source device is asleep, not the TV. Some set-top boxes output audio while their video output has crashed. Restart the box, not the TV.
- A failed HDMI cable. HDMI cables can lose their video pairs while retaining audio. Swap the cable before you swap anything else — it costs nothing to test.
- Screen brightness/backlight set to zero. Rare, but a child with a remote can do it. If you can see the menu under a torch, try raising the backlight setting.
What you should not do
Please do not open the back of the television yourself. This is not us protecting our business — it is a real hazard. The power supply board holds large capacitors that can retain a dangerous charge for a long time after the TV is unplugged. On top of that, the panel is a sheet of glass under tension; lifting it wrong cracks it, and a cracked panel converts a modest repair into a write-off.
